Like Clouds, Not Birds

ON CLOUDS, BIRDS AND PRAYER

EXTRACTS FROM MARCEL QUOIST’S “CHRIST IS ALIVE” ON PRAYER

Prayer is never easy, for it is always an attempt to go out of oneself in the presence of God. Prayer is the acquired habit of leaving everything in Jesus’ hands – of living all things in him as their lives unfold. Human effort can do little to make us concentrate on God. We must depend on God to captivate us.

LIKE CLOUDS, NOT BIRDS

 Birds fly by the will of the wing,

Clouds sail by the will of the wind.

Birds create a turbulence that propels them;

Winged action directs them through the air they disturb.

Clouds are borne by the wind that embraces them:

Are moved by the air that supports them.

Therefore, in prayer, we should be like clouds, not birds;

Not beating our ambience with active wings

But resting in the Spirit that soars and sails us.
